"Sometimes, being an artist," Maxwell has said, "there are rewards beyond

the prestige of an important commission, the amount of money, or where

the painting will finally hang. It touches my life, beyond the expected."

This painting of Ruth marks one of those significant milestones.

It is not about art, or fame, even though Ruth is the Matriarch of a large family. The painting is about a love.

Her son commissioned the portrait behind his mothers back, as a Christmas

present, bringing her to visit Maxwell's studio during the son's

and mother's first vacation together.

The creation of this painting is a collaboration of the artist, the mother and the son.
